N.I.E & Residencia
A N.I.E. number is a tax identification number. Everyone who has something to declare in Spain, regardless of origin, also foreigners who only have a holiday home in Spain, need a NIE number. This number must be used for any commercial transaction carried out in Spain.
Application for the N.I.E. number is done at the local police station by filling in a special form.
Until you have been allocated a personal N.I.E. number (Número Identificación Extranjero), one's passport number can be used as a provisional identification number. You are able to open a bank account with your passport.
We can advise in this process that sometimes can be quite demanding.
Under current Spanish law, anyone who plans to stay in Spain for a period of more than 183 days at a time, needs to apply for residence permission (Residencia). If you are resident in Spain, you will be required to pay income tax, wealth tax and inheritance tax on your worldwide values. (The Spanish tax year runs from 1 January to 31 December.) It is also very important to remember that once you are a resident, your driving license should be replaced with a Spanish.
